Scholarship

Fort Worth Garden Club, Inc. awards an annual $1,000 scholarship to a college-level junior or above, payable to the scholar’s college, university or graduate program.

Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be majoring in a field of horticulture, including floriculture, landscape design, horticulture, plant pathology, botany, biology, forestry, agronomy, environmental concerns, city floriculture planning, land management or other allied subjects. The application deadline is April 30th for a scholarship given for the following fall semester.

The scholarship honors Mary Louise Michie, former President of Fort Worth Garden Club, Inc., Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Mary Louise Michie is a former National Garden Club president (1995-1997) Mary Louise became the voice for “Millions of Trees for the Environment,” a tree-planting program of the National Council of State Garden Clubs initiated during her presidency. Under Mary Louise’s stewardship, nearly 109 million trees were planted in the United States, Mexico and Latin America; and in Arbor Day 1996 celebrations, 8,000 garden clubs planted white flowering trees as a living memorial to those killed in the Oklahoma City bombings.

For her impactful work, Michie was awarded the first annual Caroline French Morton Award, recognizing volunteer leadership in mobilizing people in tree planting, and the State Arbor Day Award.
