This award honors former FWGC president (1971-72) and National Garden Club president (1995-97), Mary Louise Michie. She became the voice for “Millions of Trees for the Environment,” and under her stewardship nearly 109 million trees were planted in the United States, Mexico and Latin America. In addition, 8,000 garden clubs planted white flowering trees in 1996 as a living memorial to those killed in the Oklahoma City bombings.
The Michie award is presented as part of the FWGC’s Arbor Day program at the November membership meeting. It recognizes a group or individual for their dedication to the planting and/or caring for trees. Just having celebrated her 100th birthday, Mary Louise was honored and assisted in giving the first award in 2013.
