Fort Worth Garden Club
2022 Arbor Day Tree Giveaway
Nancy Curl & Theresa Thomas Tree Give-away Committee
The Tree Giveaway is a project created in 2014 by the Fort Worth Garden Club Environmental Advocacy Committee. The Tree Give Away is held annually in the Fall since Arbor Day is celebrated on the first Friday in November in Texas. Fall is the best time of year to plant trees in Texas!
Over the last 9 years, the Garden Club has dedicated a portion of its budget to purchase and distribute 100 – 200 trees each year. As of this year the Club has provided a total of 1,400 tree seedlings.
200 Trees; including Live Oak, Chinkapin Oak, Desert Willow and Redbuds were picked up from Rennerwood Tree Farm in Tennessee Colony, TX on Monday, October 31. The trees were bagged and tagged for distribution. The Tarrant Regional Water District provided water bottles and rain gauges for
distribution as well.
On Friday, Nov. 4 the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department held an official Arbor Day celebration at the Southwest Regional Library on S. Hulen St. The newly selected Heritage Trees and an introduction to the Urban Forest Master Plan were announced. The City of Fort Worth was named a Tree city and gifted a flag. Kids enjoyed a special tree-themed Story Time. Stories, songs, and an activity all geared to teach kids about trees. Theresa and I were present to provide tree seedlings to those attending this event.
The Fort Worth Botanic Garden enthusiastically accepted our request to offer tree seedlings to members of the public on Saturday, November 5 to those attending the BG Japanese Festival! The manager of FW Log Cabin Village attended the FW Parks and Rec event and took a tree to plant at their site.
We were able to distribute seedlings, educate the public about trees and how to plant and care for them while promoting the FW Garden Club and their commitment to encourage the planting of trees to help neighborhoods, the community and the City of Fort Worth.
Thank you to Theresa Thomas, my Tree Give-away committee partner, Taddie Hamilton who helped with distribution, Janis Brous, Community Relations Council chairman and Teresa Hubbard, President of the Fort Worth Garden Club for supporting the Arbor Day Tree Give Away project!
We were fortunate to coordinate part of the tree distribution with the City of Ft. Worth Arbor Day celebration this year and hope to continue this collaboration in the future.
